In the six hours that Jesus hung on the cross He spoke only seven short sentences. Approximately forty-eight words in English (depending on your translation), forty words in Greek and thirty-five in Aramaic, seem like a meagre contribution from a teacher known throughout His ministry for the immensity and intensity of His words. Yet, in the little He said so much was spoken, as words of love, grace, hope and life emerged from a place of humiliation, degradation, dereliction and death. The fact that Jesus said so little during His final moments calls us to focus and reflect on the little He said. He spoke to His Father, a criminal, a friend, His mother, the onlooking crowd and cosmic spiritual forces; His words encompassed and touched the whole universe. Though unscripted they were intentional, with every word deliberately chosen and carefully delivered. Thus, His words reveal a staggering paradox as we witness a man contending with his own agonising suffering and the approach of certain death, while remaining a servant to a higher purpose, a purpose He continued to serve through His final considered and powerful words.
